Long Lake/Orono Consolidation Committee <br />Thursday, October 21,1999 <br />Page 6 <br />communiU' and how the merger will affect those issues. <br />Mayor Jabbour stated that the redevelopment of downtown Long Lake should be <br />addressed to help preserve the small service businesses that currently exist in the area. <br />Chaput commented that the City of Long Lake has recently reviewed their comprehensive <br />plan as it relates to the commcrcial/industrial section. <br />Peterson stated that life cycle housing is an important land use issue. <br />Murphy commented that the Highwav- 12 project involves some major issues as it relates to <br />the new highway corridor as well as the old Highway 12 corridor. <br />Peterson stated tliat the relocation of the 90 displaced families is also an important issue to <br />be addressed. <br />Mayor Jabbour commented that in liis opinion these issues will be resolved more easily if <br />the two cities arc consolidated <br />ChilJs inquired whether a commitment has been made to assist tlic displaced families in <br />helping them find alternate housing within the community. <br />Rapp indicated that finding replacement housing within the communitv is an important <br />objective of Long Lake as well as to keep them w ithin the Orono School District. <br />Mayor Jabbour commented that Orono has the same view. but that thc\ perhaps have not <br />recognized what steps need to be taken to achieve that objective. <br />Peterson stated in her \ ievv there may be a misperception b> some of the local residents <br />that the lower income housing will be located near or in L<>ng Lake, which should be <br />addressed. <br />Murphy commented lliat a trail and park system will be Simplified should tlie two cities <br />merge <br />Ma> or Jabbour stated that watershed and stormwater management issues w ill need to be <br />considered. <br />Implications of Highway 12 and Projected Displacement <br />Prosser stated tlut the issues surrounding tlic 1 lighway 12 project deal with the <br />displacement of some families, development along the new corridor, and redes elopment <br />of the dow ntown area <br />Childs pointed out that one factor to consider w ill be the impact on the tax base due to the
