COMMUNITES IN COLLABORATION COUNCIL
Overview:
The Communities in Collaboration Council (CICC) was established in 1993 to help build
a healthy, nurturing community for the children and youth who live in the eight
municipalities within the geographic boundaries of the Wayzata School District,
including the City of Orono. Our mission is to promote collaborative planning and
development among all aspects of the community in order to build assets for our families
and youth.
The CICC’s mission to promote the development of assets in families and youth is based
upon the 40 developmental assets established by the Search Institute of Minneapolis,
Minnesota. The Search Institute’s research has demonstrated a strong correlation
between the presence of assets in youth (i.e., a family life that provides high levels of
love and support, schools that provide a caring encouraging environment, young people
who are given useful roles in the community) and the decrease in high-risk behaviors
(i.e., use of alcohol or drugs, early se.xual activity, possession or use of a weapon).
Pkase refer to addendum #1 for a list of the speciHc goals of the CICC for 1999-
2000.
The CICC brings together key community players (the schools, government, community
organizations, social service organizations, business and communities of faith) to focus
on specific goals. By working collaboratively, the CICC eliminates duplicative efforts
and combines resources to address the issues affecting families in our community. There
is one part-time staff person who is responsible for coordinating the planning and projects
of the CICC.
All CICC initiatives (such as the Parenting with Vision series) are marketed widely to the
families within the Wayzata School District, including Orono, Wayzata, Plymouth,
Maple Grove, Medina, Corcoran, Minnetonka and Medicine Lake. All information is
publicized in the Community Education brochure, .‘school (public and private)
newsletters, church bulletins, local newspapers, cable TV, etc.
In addition, the CICC publishes a monthly newsletter. Families First, that is distributed to
8,000 families within our service area, including Orono. Finally, this year the CICC has
been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Local Collaborative Time Study monies. This
grant will be used to host a “Train the Trainer” conference. Attendees (including
repre5(<*ntati''es from Orono) will be educated about asset development and equipped with
specitjc ideas and methods to increase assets among the youth with whom they work or
relate. Each attendee will then be expected to conduct at least one asset building training
session for the community or organization he/she represents. This will, in turn, further
impact the broader Orono community.
