By way of explanation, Dr. Mich stated that the calendar approved
earlier by the Board was contingent upon legislative action
rescinding the additional three instructional days to the school
calendar. As this did not happen, the tentatively adopted calendar
must be altered to add two additional instructional days which
provides for 184 faculty days as required by the Master Agreement
and for 177 student instructional days. Peg Swanson stated that
having to change the calendar is unfortunate because the loss is in
staff development days which are so necessary for staff. She
stated that she regrets that she cannot support this calendar
because of the reduction in staff development days and that she
sees this as more a legislative issue that the District literally
can do nothing about and she feels compelled to cast a negative
vote. The Board expressed frustration regarding the development of
school calendars and legislative requirements.
The question was called. Lewis, Van de Ven, Veach and McKown voted
in favor. Swanson voted against. Maresh absent.
Motion carried.
Neal Lawson provided information to the Board on the bids for site
work at the new middle school and at the high school. He stated
that the bids, with the exclusion of the fencing, are below the
budget estimates and he reviewed the bids/rejections. He then
called on Gary Benson and Rich Jacobson, Kraus-Anderson
Construction Company - Midwest Division who answered questions from
the Board for clarification purposes.
UPON MOTION by Dave McKown, seconded by Peg Swanson, the Board of
Education awarded Orono Middle School and High School Site
Development to the following:
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
6)
Gradiny/Earthwork to F.M. Frattalone in the amount of
$439,400;
Site utilities to Veit & Company in the amount of
$241,418;
Concrete curbs/walks to Crosstown Masonry Co. in the
amount of $178,000;
Asphalt Paving to EWJ Corporation in the amount of
$289,824;
Fencing/backstops - reject all bids;
Landscaping/irrigation to Arteka corporation in the
amount of $129,785 base bid and $27,387 Alternate
No. 1;
as the lowest possible bidders.
Maresh absent.
Motion carried.
