the plans/direction that the District is moving which will aide <br />cities in their planning of recreational areas/fields, etc. <br />Dr. Mich stated that because of the legislative constraints which <br />added 3 student contact days to the 1998-99 school year calendar, <br />he was not able to recommend an extra half day professional day as <br />requested by the Staff Development Committee and he has relayed <br />that decision to that committee. He then provided background <br />information on the development of the school year calendar <br />inclusive of legislative constraints. He stated that at this time <br />a bill has already been introduced in the legislature to alter the <br />existing law and that it appears there will be support for such a <br />change which would significantly impact the development of the <br />District's 1999-2000 year calendar. He reminded the Board that <br />approval of the school year calendar must be done by April 1 of <br />each year for the following year but that in light of possible <br />legislative changes, he recommended that the Board wait as long as <br />possible to develop/approve the 1999-2000 calendar in order to <br />avoid the development of two calendars. <br />Dr. Mich stated that the Board in their packets had received <br />curriculum policies and procedures that were required by <br />graduation rule legislation, now formatted to the style of <br />District's policies/procedures. He reminded the Board that <br />had approved these policies/procedures on May 11, 1998 and <br />while the policies/procedures meet the requirements of the <br />they have been adapted to the Orono School District. <br />the <br />the <br />the <br />they <br />that <br />law. <br />LO •Heidi Foley, Curriculum Coordinator, provided information to <br />the Board on CART, the system that will now be used for record <br />keeping. Discussion ensued covering such areas as meeting standard <br />requirements/grading and informing parents regarding <br />packages/scoring. <br />The outcome of this discussion was that a letter would be drafted <br />from the Board of Education to be sent to the House/Senate members <br />of the Education Committee. The purpose would be to relay concerns <br />that the Board has with regard to implementation of the Graduation <br />Rule plus requesting that the Education Committee work to correct <br />the deficiencies in the law. Administration was directed to draft <br />this letter for Board consideration/approval .
