The Saga
Hill Preservation society requested the Park Commission to recommend to the
council that the City allocates funds to supplement the money they have raised
so far by grants and donations. Their fundraising might be between 40 and 48
thousand below their goal. The park commission has mixed thoughts both “pro"
and "con"about this request.
Con: The city has limited funds available for land acquisition and there are other
areas of the city such as Navarre that has a greater need for additional open
space. This Saga Hill Currently has 9 acres of land for recreation and an
additional amount of open space. The land they want to purchase is not itself
unique or environmentally significant.
Pro: This is a “once in a lifetime ” opponunity to purchase land to expand this
Park. The city for a very reasonable price of $6,000.00 per acre or $48,000.00
for $215,000.00 worth of land can expand the size of this park to over thirty
acres. This will help reduce or possibly eliminate the potential storm water
management problems in this area. This will also solve the need to expand or
modify the city sewer boundaries.
-7-
