PDI PERSONNEL
DECISIONS
INTERNATIONAL
M EMO
DATE:
TO:
From:
SUBJECT:
21 September 2000
Orono Mayor and Council
c/o City Administrator
Harry Brull
Police Chief Recruitment and Organizational Audit Process
f-
ii-
I am writing to update you on the process and to alert you of the next steps and your involvement.
The recruitment is well imderway. Applications close October 31. This date was necessary because of national
publication schedules. I have met with two of the three other mayors and am scheduled to meet with the police
department on Oaober 2. In addition to statewide and nationsd advertising, we have sent a personal letter to
every police chief in Minnesota asking him/her to nominate individuals.
Like you, I want to make the chief’s selection during the 2000 calendar year. In order to meet this aggressive
timetable, I am asking you to consider your availabiUty for the next steps in the process.
Following our receipt of applications and request for additional information, we will narrow the field to
approximately six semi-finaliks. These individuals will be invited to Orono. Usually at this point, the mayor and
council (or a search committee) would wish to interview candidates. This activity would require approximately
six to seven hours and could be accomplished in a single day or over two evenings. I would also plan for the
candidates to interview with representatives from the department and the city administrator.
At this point, I need your decision as to whether you wish to interview semi-finalist candidates, and your
availability to conduct these interviews on one of the following dates: Saturday, November 11; Monday,
November 13; Tuesday, November 14; Wednesday, November 15; or Thursday, November 16.
I have also agreed to come to a council session on Monday, October 26 to share the results of the
organizational audit and a draft of the position profile.
After the semi-finalists’ visit, finalist selection would commence. I would anticipate a very brief meeting within
a day or two of the semi-finalists’ visit. At that point, PDI would conduct an in-depth evaluation/reference
checking/background investigation of designated finalists. This information would then be shared with you. A r
that point, you may be in a position to make a decision, or you may wish to re-interview one or more finalists
Given the schedule, I would anticipate having information regarding the finalists available to you no later than
Thursday, December 7. This would provide enough flexibUity regarding the final step in the process.
