w 04/06/00 10:06 g :02/02 NO:255l-z
Memo if I Bonestroo
SM Rosene
Anderflk^
|\J^ AssodjRM
4 AfiDhMtf
Project Name: Snyder ’s Site Client: City of Orono
To: Tom Kellogg
From: Pt»ilip J. Caswell, P.E.
Fite No: 139-98-000
Date: 04/04/00
Re: Segmental Retaining Walt Review
Remarks:
I have reviewed the Information submitted for the proposed segmental retaining wall at the Snyder's site,
and have the following comments:
1.
2.
3.
4.
The design calculations are preliminary only, and are NOT FOR CONSTRUCTION. They also are
not signed by a P.E. This signature is necessary. Therefore, the information is being sent back
without a full review.
Site soils information and geotechnical recommendations are necessary. Only assumed values
were used for the preliminary design. Sampling (borings) must be done - particularly near the lower
■pond* area. I would expect that some subsoil correction will be necessary. A geotechnical
engineer must be involved In the design - before simply "verifying* that the in-situ site soils are as
expected.
A global stability analysis should bo conducted for at least the area near the pond. The soft soils
one would expect in this area, overlain by 16 feet of new fill, appear to bo highly suscoptiblo to
stability failure. Conditions for high water and low water should be investigated.
Tho site plan does not indicate where a fence or railing Is to be located. A wall of this height next to
traffic must have a barrier to protect vehicles and pedestrians from going over.
In summary, this is a significant wall - up to 26 feet in height - and requires that detailed soils information
be obtained and final analysis and design bo conducted by a P.E.
Coll mo at ext. 4766 if you have questlone.
Bonestroo, Rosene, Anderllk and Aesoelalee, Inc.
St. Paul Otflca:
2335 West M ghway 36
St. Paul.
