L <br />ORONO GOLF COURSE <br />GOLF COURSE IMPROVEMENT STRATEGY <br />D«scription <br />Holes number one and two are par four holes playing to 224 yards and 231 yards respectively. Both holes <br />play from an elevated tee to a lower fairway to an elevated green. Greens for both holes are round in <br />shape and small in size occupying less than 2,000 square feet each. <br />In order to effectively move to an eight (8) minute inten/al system, both opening holes (holes one and two) <br />will rteed to be lengthened in order that they both function as true two (2) shot holes. Lengthening each <br />hole to the 300 plus yard range and constructing a larger first green in the 4,000 square foot range wilt <br />ultimately lower the average time required to play the opening holes. <br />General Design <br />Based on the configuration of the land in question, the general terrain flow of both holes will continue to <br />be elevated tee to a lower fairway to an elevated green. Where possfcle severe sloping will be minimized. <br />This is particularly important in the upper half of the first fairway as it meets the front of the new first green. <br />To insure proper player safety from ball flight, the new first green will be sited slightly further to the right in <br />order to create shot angles that work away from the second hole. The first fainvay will be reshaped slightly <br />in order to contribute to this goal. <br />The new first green should be sited to provide the player with visibility of the green surface for all approach <br />shots. The green should be constructed with enough depth to help hold a variety of shot trajectories <br />resulting from a large variety of players. Contouring should be considered closely in order to provide the <br />player with an appropriate and fair putting challenge. <br />The irrigation system will need to be extended to adequately cover the rtew green ar>d tee conyrlex. In <br />addition, both surface and subsurface drainage systems will be included to rrtaintain proper playing <br />conditions at all times. <br />Tee Construction <br />The excavation plan for the second hole tee complex should include the irtstallation of appropriate <br />subsurface drainage system and irrigation system in order to insure long term turf grass health. Surface <br />drainage will be factored at a one percent slope in the direction of the general land flow. The minimum <br />grade for lee slopes and banks will be four to one. <br />Soil specifications must be closely supervised with existing top soils in the overall excavation area <br />stripped, stockpiled, and ultimately utilized as topsoil for the new tee complex. Grassing should be with a <br />climate suitable bluegrass. <br />Green Construction <br />The new first green should be constructed as close to U.S.G A. specifications as is cost effective. A <br />green constructed to these specifications performs best over time having the advantages of rapid <br />drainage, good aeration, deep rooting, and lessened disease factors.
