Trapping Application DISCUSSION; Orono Police (ICR 03-4465) have been contacted by propen> owners on Orono Oaks Drive. There is concern being expressed about beavers causing damage to private propert>-. This damage involves trees being cut and building dams that are causing the road to flood. The flooding of the road is causing potential damage to the road bed which can have significant cost to the residents. This is a private road. The homeowners are responsible for it’s maintenance. There is an experienced trapper that is willing to come and trap the beaver in the area of Orono Oaks focusing only on the pond area that is causing this particular problem. This trapper is w illing to set his traps under w ater to protect domestic animals and children. This method of trapping is specific to beaver or muskrat trapping. Letters have been sent to all residents with in 500 feet of the trapping area as is proscribed by City ordinance. The local conservation officer has been notified of the problem and preferred method of removal. Conserv ation officers have told residents that it is ok to shoot the problem beaver however there is concern about shooting in this area. Trapping under water is the most selective and least dangerous method to correct the problem. The trapper that is willing to trap this area is licensed by the DNR for trapping. In that this trapper was contacted to come and correct a problem for the residents, is not seeking authority to trap for himself and will also resolve a problem for the City, it is felt the trapper application fee should be waived.
