REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Date: 7/14/03
.JUi.,.1 4 <:i'W
CITY OF ORONO
Item No: j tj.
Department Approval:Administrator Reviewed:Agenda Section:
Name:
Title:
Stephany Good^J
Chiefof Police
Item Description: Police Department Web Site Design & Implementation Donation
DISCUSSION
A major goal of the Orono Police Department (OPD) in the past two years is to improve its
relationship with the community by providing quality services. Discussions with members of the
community have shown that citizens do not have access to knowledge about Orono police
activity and services. Discussion also has shown that the police department could improve
service through more frequent positive contacts with the public.
In 2001, Officer Scott Boris designed a web site for the police department which was the
beginning of a way for the Orono police to exchange information with the people they serve.
Beginning in November 2002, Orono resident Stephanie Grande volunteered her expert services
in redesigning the web site. She spent over 346 hours meeting with other members of the
community and the police officers to publish a web site that contains over 110 original .html
pages with about 70 relevant links and 15 downloadable .pdf files. She custom designed all of
the navigation, layout, logos, images, and graphics for the site.
Ms. Grande stated that she decided to use the motto of the OPD (Fairness, Service, Pride and
Quality) as central themes for the site and as she spent time talking w ith the staff and riding with
officers on duty. She said, “I came to realize these truly are the guiding principles of the work
the police officers do in the community.”
Normally an employer would charge S80/hr consulting fee for this t>pe of work. The total value
of this donation could be calculated at over S20,00C.
The Orono Police web site is located at http;//www.oronopoIice.org. It is linked to the City of
Orono Web Site. Ron Olson, Orono's Assistant Finance Director provided technical assistance
on the project.
COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED
Motion to accept donation of time and expertise from Stephanie Grande for building the new
Orono Police Department web site.
i
