A RESOLUTION REQUESTING A VARIANCE FROM MINNESOTA <br />RULES FOR STATE AID OPERATIONS CHAPTER 8820 <br />WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Orono is preparing construction plans for the <br />replacement of the Fox Street Bridge over Long Lake Creek, Existing Bridge No. L8865, which <br />is considered deficient according to Mn/DOT’s standards; and <br />WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Orono, its citizens, and city staff believe that <br />the minimum design standards set forth by Minnesota Statutes as applicable to the proposed <br />replacement of Bridge No. L8865 create an uidue hardship; and <br />WHEREAS, said hardship is further explained in the attached supplementary letters <br />from The Orono Director of Public Services/City Engineer and Orono’s Consulting Engineering <br />Firm; and <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Orono City Council, located in <br />Hennepin County, Minnesota, hereby respectfully submits a request for a variance to the <br />Commissioner of Transportation for Minnesota Rules for State Aid Operations, Ch^ter 8820.9920, <br />Geometric Design Standards; Rural and Suburban Undivided; New or Reconstruction Projects, as <br />they apply to the proposed Fox Street bridge replacement project located in the City of Orono, so as <br />to allow ^e following: <br />1.12-foot Traffic Lane Widths and 2-foot Shoulder Widths; in lieu of the <br />minimum 12-foot traffic lanes and four foot shoulder widths required; <br />2. A 28-foot bridge roadway width; in lieu of the minimum 36-foot width required; <br />Page 1 of2
