I
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
DATE: February 24,2003
ITEM NO.: ^
Department Approval:
Name Gregory A. Gappa
Title Director of Public Services
Administrator Reviewed: Agenda Section:
Public Services Director’s Report
Item Description: Request for Purchase of a Replacement Utility Truck
The 1'' ’3 Sewer and Water Utility Funds Capital Equipment Budgets included $55,000 (Sewer
Fund V35,OOT', Water Fund $20,000) for the replacement of the 1994 utility truck and
access. >1165. This truck has 145,000 miles on it and is in poor mechanical condition. The utility
truck is 1 a daily basis and also for emergency call outs for incidents such as lift station
alarms.
The truck will be purchased through the Cooperative Purchasing State Bid Contract from
Hinckley Chevrolet and is a model K-3500, diesel,!-ton four wheel drive truck. The cost for the
truck is $29,500. We are recommending the purchase of a Chevrolet Uiick because our other
small trucks are all Chevrolet brand which allows for the standardization of repair and
maintenance supplies.
The existing truck box was purchased in 1994 with the truck, but the hoist is a 1988 model that
was retained from the previous utility truck. The new box will have a built-in inverter that runs
off of the truck engine to provide 120 volt electricity for the operation of small electric tools and
the ventilation blower. Currently, we are using a separate gasoline-powered generator to operate
the electric equipment. The inverter will eliminate the need to use the separate generator. The
new box will also have more storage space and separated compartments for more organized
storage of tools and supplies.
The truck box and hoist will be purchased through the Cooperative Purchasing State Bid
Contract from Crystecl Truck Equipment, Fridley Minnesota. The cost for this equipment
including installation is $20,000.
The existing utility truck with the ho\ and hoist will be sold as a complete unit at an upcoming
Hennepin County u.sed vehicle auction. This will maximize the auction value of the truck and
acces.sones.
The total cost for the truck and accessories is $49,500 which is less than the budgeted amount of
$55,000. We are recommending the purchase of this equipment from the listed vendors
Page 1 of 2
