REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION JUN 1 3 2005
DATE: June 13,200®ITY OF ORONO
ITEM NO.: / I
Department Approval:
Name Gregory A. Gappa
Title Director of Public Services
Admlniitratar Reviewed: Agenda Section:
Public Services Director's Report
Item Description: Award Contract for Navarre Water Tower Rehabilitation Project
The 2005 Water Fund Capital Budget includes $350,000 for the rehabilitation and painting of the
Navarre water tower. This project is scheduled for August and September of this year and will
require complete containment of the tower because of the lead based paint on the tower. The project
also includes minor rehabilitation work on the tower.
The City can choose the paint color for the tower. Our recommendation is to repaint the tower to
match the existing blue color. The blue color is appropriate for this tower as it is near Lake
Minnetonka. If the Council wishes to select a different color for the tower, we can provide color
samples for review. The paint color can be selected after the contract is awarded
This project was advertised for bids in the Construction Bulletin and the Laker/Pioneer newspapers
with a bid opening at 2:00 p.m. on June 7th. Six bids were submitted, and the lowest responsible bid
received was from Classic Protective Coatings Menomonie, Wisconsin in the amount of $203,231.00
for the Base Bid and $4,000.00 for Alternate Number 1 which is to paint the City name in black
letters on the tower the same as the Highway 12 tower.
This company has satisfactorily completed other water tower painting projects and the
recommendation is to award the contract to include both the Base Bid and Alternate Number 1 for
the Navarre water tower rehabilitation project.
COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED:
Award contract for the Navarre Water Rehabilitation Project to Classic Protective Coatings
Menomonie. Wisconsin; award to include both the Base Bid and Alternate Number 1 in the amount
of $207,231.00 to be funded from the Water Fund 2005 Capital Budget.
imrit - kir
