2 Summit Beach Park Master Plan: Executive Summary
<br />Arriving at the Proposed Improvements
<br />Based on a variety of factors (existing slopes, wetland, overall park size, access, surrounding environment, important
<br />history, public input, and City of Orono needs) the overall recommendation is to maintain the existing natural look and
<br />feel of the park while proposing minor improvements to enhance the user experience. Maintaining the park’s passive,
<br />natural qualities and valuable open space are a priority.
<br />The site analysis supports this by showing the isolating steep slopes and heavily vegetated southern section of the
<br />park. No improvements are planned for this southern area due to physical restrictions. The master plan includes
<br />preserving the existing wetland in the flat, west-central part of the site as a large, open non-programmed area. The
<br />large mature trees and scenic knoll located along the north-east end of the park are strongly valued assets that help
<br />define the park. The existing parking lot is sized appropriately. Due to the park’s limited area yet diverse recreation
<br />activities, any proposed amenities, including structures, should be sized to fit within the existing character and placed
<br />in a location that limits impacts to existing trees.

<br />The following recommendations are based on a variety of sources including; public input, the Steering Committee and
<br />the City of Orono’s recreation needs. Proposed improvements are not in any particular order of importance.
