Nondale <br />M3 <br />J.1 <br />m i < <br /><.r. <br />' V <br />i-S <br />Wendell Anderson and Robert Vaughn <br />To acquaint the general public with the project and its needs, <br />hundreds of speeches were made to various groups during <br />1969-1970. including Dick Grays talk at Minnesota ’s first <br />Earth Day observance in 1970. <br />Numerous television and radio appearances helped p^lss the <br />word on the proposed Institute, including a 14-hour'Telethon <br />for Freshwater" in 1972. Robert Vaughn. TV’s “Man from <br />U.N.C.L.E.. acted as master of ceremonies Appearances <br />on the telethon included Minnesota Governor Wendell <br />Anderson, swimmer and actor Buster Crabbe. TV’s “Mr. <br />Wizard, and dozens of acts, groups, and individuals. <br />Thousands of people shared the Foundation s coticern. <br />Famous names all over the nation and the world were <br />endorsing the project. The general public became familiar with <br />the concept. <br />If the Institute was to have a national/international impact, <br />conceptual support had to come from state and national <br />sources. With this in mind, cotitacts at the federal level were <br />initiated. Dozens of policitians and officials were personally <br />briefed: presidential advisers, representatives from Congress, <br />the Senate, the Atomic Energy Commission, the Department <br />of the Interior, the National Science Foundation, and <br />countless others. <br />At the state level, many legislators and major public officials <br />were personally contacted, and all were placed on a mailing <br />^ <br />4 <br />4 # <br />list for the Foundation newsletter. Facets of Freshwater, which <br />updated the happenings related to the Institute. By the end of <br />1972. the mailing list had grown to tiearly 3.()()() selected <br />names throughout the country.
