D. Transit Services and Fadliries <br />1. Introduction <br />The information contained in this section is derived from the revised policy plan and from the <br />Regional Transit Board's (RTB) Transit Service Needs Assessment and other studies. This <br />section identifies the existing metropolitan transit services and facilities, and identities <br />appropriate improvements to the system. The City of Orono should work with the RTB in <br />amending its comprehensive plan transit element <br />The Council would like to emphasize the importance of the city's role in planning and <br />development of effective transit services. While it is important that the city prepare an adequate <br />transit component of the comprehensive plan, it is even more essential that each city create an <br />environment that encourages ridesharing and transit use. Examples of development site designs <br />and street improvements that foster transit, including ridesharing, are found in the "Handbook <br />on TraCBc Mitigation". This handbook also includes examples of city ordinances that encourage <br />employer and developer commitment to transit, ndesharing and other travel demand <br />management efforts. <br />2. Existing Transit Services <br />Existing transit services in Orono are outlined below. For more detail on transit services, see <br />Attachment E: RTB's Transit Service Needs Assessment Subarea Market Analysis. <br />(a) Existing Regular Route Services <br />Service is operated in the City of Orono by the Metropolitan Transit Commission (MTC). <br />The MTC operates one local route, route 51. and one express route, route 75. through <br />Orono. More detailed information is included in the attached Transit Service Needs <br />Assessment (TSNA) Subarea Analysis. <br />(b) Existing Ridesharing and Travel Demand Management (TDNfi Efforts <br />Mirmesota Rideshare provides rideshate services to employers, communities, and <br />individuals in the Twin Cities Metropditan Area. Mirmesota Rideshare provides pool <br />matching services to individuals, localized and regional marketing, and technical assistance <br />to employers and others in developing rideshare programs at the work site. <br />(c) Existing Park-and-Ride Lots <br />The City of Ororv) has one park-and-ride lot with a capacity of 25 parking spaces for <br />poolers and bus riders. This lot is described in mote detail in the RTB's Transit Service <br />Needs Assessment Subarea Analysis located in Attachment E <br />(d) Existing Elderly and Disabled Services <br />Special tr^portation for elderly and disabled persons is provided in Orono by Metro <br />Mobility service. <br />3. Transit Service and Facility Needs <br />The following needs and strategies have been identified to improve transit service in the City of <br />Orono.
