INSTALLATION GENERAL INFORMATION flSI:
GETTING STARTED
Before beginning construction, analyze your site and develop a general layout and accurate
plan. Carefully consider topography and drainage patterns. Design your wall so rainwater Is
routed around the ends rather than over the top. Be sure to check local building codes, lot lines,
and burled utility line locations. If you have any questions or unusual site conditions, consult
a qualified engineer, a landscape architect, or your nearest ALLAN BLOCK distributor.
ORDERING MATERIAL
Once you've completed your plan, measure the total square footage of retaining wall needed.
Multiply the wall length by Its average height to find the total square footage. Be sure to consider
the amount of base wall which must be buried to lock in the bottom of each wall.
VtfALLHEIGHT
2*
3*
4'
AMOUNT TO BURY
4 inches
6 inches
8 Inches
f^e-engineered design chans are available lor walls over 4'
Each ALLAN BLOCK is 15 1/2 inches long by 6 1/2 Inches high. Fourteen ALLAN BLOCKS
win cover 10 square feet. Multiply the total square footage by 1.4 to find the total number of
ALLAN BLOCKS needed. Be sure to account for the comer blocks and the angle blocks
needed for your particular plan.
PREPARE THE FOUNDATION
Begin by stripping the top soil and vegetation. Excavate a trench along the planned location of
each new wall deep enough to accommodate the amount of buried block required and a thin
layerof granular base. Fill in the a'-S' layer of compacted sand or gravel at the bottom for leveling.
All walls should be constructed on stable, compacted ground to prevent major settling. Footings
are usually unnecessary on wails 4 ft. and lower. In heavy soil conditions, provide drainage for
any water build-up behind the wall. Install drain tile behind the base course of each wall so that
the water will drain around the sides and out.
INSTALL THE BASE COURSE
Begin by placing ALLAN BLOCKS side by side on the prepared foundation with the raised lip
facing out Level each block from side to side and from front to back. Check for level often and
use a string line as you go to check for straightness. Carefully backfill around the base blocks
and pack to lock In place. Complete the entire base course in this manner.
011/88
