MINUTES OF THE PLANNING COMMISSIOR MEETING HELD NOVEMBER 17 , 1986 <br />#GRACE BAPTIST CHURCH <br />2830 SHADYWOOD ROAD <br />VARIANCE - SECOND REVIEW <br />Bill Mulligan <br />present. <br />representing Grac-e Baptist Church was <br />Zoning Administrator Mabusth explained the second plan <br />submitted for the church sign that is considerably lower <br />in height and provides more signage area, which <br />satisfies the needs of the church. The new sign <br />proposal will create no safety hazards for the users of <br />the adjacent intersection on County Rd. 19. The <br />variances requested are as follows: <br />a) 49.6 s.f. or 413% area variance over allowed 12 s.f. <br />b) 3'9" or 49% height variance over allowed 8 feet <br />Staff recommends approval for the new sign proposed by <br />the Grace Baptist Church referred to as the Supra design <br />of the Herald I model. <br />Planning Commission <br />Comments - <br />Taylor - He <br />stated he <br />was in <br />favor of <br />staff <br />recommendation <br />to approve <br />the proposal <br />as submitted. <br />Hanson - He stated he was in favor of staff <br />recommendation to ;-,ppr ove the proposal as submitted. <br />Kelley -- He stated he felt the plan way overambitious in <br />regard to height and area. <br />Goetten - She agreed with Chairman Kelley stating the <br />she felt the "Standard" sign was more suitable. <br />Bellows - She stated a 413% variance is too significant <br />and she felt the needs could be satisfied with the <br />"Standard" sign. <br />Mr. Mulligan noted that Calvary Memorial Church has the <br />"Standard" sign and it is hard to read. <br />It was moved by Goet ten , seconded by Chairman Kelley, to <br />recommend approval of the "Standard" design of the <br />Herald I model noting the hardship being 12 s.f. is not <br />sufficient area to convey message and subject. to staf f's <br />findings. Motion, Ayes 3, Nays 2. Taylor and Hanson <br />voted nay as they were in favor of staff recommendation. <br />The minority of two fey t the applicant had responded <br />very specifically to the direction of this r Jy at their <br />September meeting which was to reduce the height and <br />increase signage area as this was the primary need of <br />the church. <br />7 <br />
