Painter's Creek Development 4 , December 9, 1983
Soil Profile
The soil profile was determined using a backhoe to excavate a test pit
to a depth of 8 ft. By examining the side alls of the test pit, a more
accurate evaluation of the soil profile an change in strata cold be made
on a continuous basis. After the soil pro ile was recorded, the test pits
were backfilled.
The soils encountered were visualy a d manually classified in accor-
dance with the Unified Soil Classificaion System. The soil description
consisted of soil texture, color, moisture content, depth of mottling, and
any lenses of other soils or degree of cob les and boulders encountered.
The capitalized letters in parentheses fol owing the soil description is
the soil classification. The soil profile at each of the lots are shown on
the attached sheets corresponding to the 1 t numbers.
Percolation Test
The percolation tests were conducCed n accordance with the procedure
outlined in the University of Minnesota Ex ension Folder 261. A 6 in.
diameter hole was dug with a hand auger to a measured depth of 12 in. The
bottom of the hole was cleaned, and the bo tom and sides were scraped with
a knife to remove smeared surfaces. Appro imately 2 to 3 in. of washed
3/4 in. to No. 4 aggregate were placed in he bottom of each of the holes.
The holes were then filled with water and llowed to soak for 24 hours. In
most of the holes, the water drained by th following morning; however,
measureable rain during the night made the ground saturated before running
the test.
