As soon as we witnessed the serene rowing <br /> shells on the lake we were pleased to find that Long Lake rowing was not a private club but <br /> available to all, so we promptly joined this fun group of rowers last year. <br /> What a great community of people,we quickly got involved with their extra curricular work <br /> for the broader community,volunteering to support the Schools program,Long Lake Fire <br /> Department,teaching groups and many other events. <br /> First things first. Day one at Birch's restaurant where LLRC is currently located was eye <br /> opening- all of the rowing shells were spread out in various barns, homes and storage <br /> facilities for Winter. They needed to be transported to an open but wooded location below the <br /> restaurant and set up on temporary racks. It's an interesting challenge to rotate a 30'rowing <br /> shell on it's side and then thread it through trees to find a spot where the boat is strapped down <br /> to hopefully protect it from the elements - such a shame for equipment that is not just <br /> expensive but has history (I was carrying one of the Olympic boats used by Canada,now with <br /> LLRC).And then the crazy challenge to get these boats on the water, a hike via a muddy steep <br /> hillside track that had me jumping in to assist with a boat that was about to be dropped by it's <br />
