industrial district will be adequately lighted, but will not become a visual
imposition on adjoining land uses.
i. Section 78-831 Lighting —A change was made reflecting the Planning
Commission's direction that light poles should be of a dark color to minimize
the visual impacts of reflected light.
j. Section 78-832 Signage — This section received a significant amount of
attention, primarily relating to the appropriate size regulations for an industrial
district. The previous draft ordinance maximized building signage at 5% of
the building wall, and required that individual tenant signage in multiple tenant
buildings would be no greater than 32 square feet in area. Property owner
representatives lobbied for larger tenant signage allowances, so long as the
5% threshold was adhered to. There was mixed support for this idea,
suggesting opposing views about the need for larger sign areas for industrial
businesses. The existing ordinance permits individual signs up to 100 square
feet in area. The current draft reorganizes the material slightly for clarity, but
does not include revised signage areas from the previous draft. If larger sign
sizes are considered appropriate by the City Council, the ordinance could be
revised to increase the maximum sign size, or eliminate an individual sign
regulation and rely solely on the 5% threshold.
3
