Public Serv�ces Plan <br /> PR�VA TEL Y OPERA TED UTILI TIES AND SER VICES <br /> Citizens and properties in Orono are provided with power and communication <br /> services by public utility companies operating under public regulation and <br /> franchise. Sanitation services are provided by private haulers operating under <br /> license from the City. As in other elements of the CMP, the availability of <br /> service levels varies between the urban and rural portions of the City. In <br /> addition, electricity and telephone service districts are each divided between two <br /> different utility companies making coordination with City officials and City <br /> policy more involved than if only one company were involved. <br /> NA1'URAL GAS SERVICE <br /> Natural gas service is provided in Orono by the :`.?��u����^��n �=�� �'�m� <br /> Centerpoint Eneray (formerly "Minnegasco"�. Gas service is available in all of <br /> Orono's Urban Area and is also available along certain rural roadways as shown <br /> on 1�1ap 4F-4 (Map 4F-4 has never been created because info not <br /> available...). Gas main extensions have been provided to new development <br /> within the perimeter of the existing network. Areas not provided with gas main <br /> service are dependent upon electricity, fuel oil or propane for heating fuel. <br /> ELECTRICAL SERVICE <br /> Electrical service is provided in Orono by two separate utilities. Northern States <br /> Po�ver (NSP) provides service to most of Orono with local offices in Shorew�ood. <br /> Wright-Hennepin Co-op Electric Association, with offices in Rockford, pro�ides <br /> service to a fe�v properties in northern an.d northwestern Orono. The service <br /> areas are divided as show�n on Map 4F-5 (will be created and added to CMP). <br /> In the case of both utilities, most existing service is of the overhead type with <br /> most new services to subdivisions or to individual homes being of the <br /> underground type. <br /> TELEPHONE SERVICE <br /> Telephone service is provided in Orono by two separate utilities. U.S. West <br /> provides service to most of the City ��-ith � Frontier providing service to <br /> certain neighborhoods in wrestern Orono (see Ma� 4F-6 TO BE UPllATEll). <br /> With the proliferation of home computers, fax machines and electronic <br /> communication devices inaking use of telepho�le lines, the Twin Cities Metro <br /> area has been split into 4 area codes to accomm�date the demand tor phone lines. <br /> Nearlv all of Orono is within area code 9�2 and served by numerous prefixes <br /> including 249, 404, 47l, 472, 473, 47�, and 476. A small portion of the <br /> north���est corner of Orono is served by area code 763 (479- prefi�es). All Orono <br /> exchanges have toll-free access to all other telephone exchan�es in the <br /> metropolitan T�vin Cities service area.
