MINUTES OF THE REGULAR ORONO PARK COMMISSION <br /> MEETING HELD ON DECEMBER 2, 1997 <br /> C. BONFIRE - GAPPA <br /> Gappa said he was concerned with the logistics of having bonfires, though, he <br /> thought it was a nice idea. Gappa said the darkness and inability to guarantee a <br /> full moon while advertising ahead of time could crate problems. Sliding in the <br /> dark is also an issue. Wilson suggested the idea be delayed until the rink is <br /> established and reconsidered at that time. Welles said afternoon bonfires could <br /> also be done. <br /> Wilson asked about liability. Gappa said the bonfire would have to be monitored, <br /> but the biggest issue of liability is sliding. <br /> Wilson asked if letters were sent to the neighborhoods regarding rink closures. <br /> Gappa said he did not do this. Since the indoor ice time idea was eliminated, he <br /> thought the rink at Hackberry should continue. Gappa said the maintenance of the <br /> rink is not time consuming. He received one call about the closure and does not <br /> want to eliminate that rink. Gappa noted that Bederwood has a history of poor ice <br /> conditions and has a potential concern with snowmobiles. <br /> Beal asked about a light at Hackberry. Gappa said the rink would be opened <br /> during the day. <br /> McDermott suggested the rink at Hackberry be provided until the rink is available <br /> at the golf course and then re-evaluated. <br /> Wilson suggested all Commissioners visit Hackberry, review ice conditions and <br /> usage. She said she is not a believer in maintaining ice rinks that are not <br /> maintained well. Erickson agreed that the rink had poor ice conditions the past <br /> two years. Wilson said she has never seen anyone skating on it either. Gappa <br /> indicated that the weather is the biggest issue for flooding. <br /> (#4) OPEN SPACE REPORT - WILSON <br /> Wilson asked that the report sent to Moorse be reviewed quickly. She wanted all <br /> Commissioners to be aware of what was reported to Moorse. Wilson asked that the <br /> Commissioners consider whether they agree with the concepts of the mission statement, <br /> problem statement, and goals. <br /> McDermott noted that the open space report has not changed substantially. A second <br /> paragraph was added to the problem statement. <br /> Wilson asked that the date of the survey be indicated, 1994, which was conducted by <br /> Decision Resources. <br /> 7 <br />
