MINUTES OF THE REGULAR ORONO PARK COMMISSION <br /> MEETING HELD ON DECEMBER 2, 1997 <br /> (#2D - Fishing Piers - Continued) <br /> McDermott suggested the motion be stated to promote safety for swimmers. <br /> Welles thought if the area was made attractive for fishing, people would be drawn <br /> more to the area. <br /> Beal amended his motion to not promote fishing by adding a fishing pier at <br /> Summit Beach and adding signage for "no fishing". <br /> McDermott asked to include reviewing beach regulations. <br /> Vote: Ayes 5,Nays 0. <br /> (#3) WINTER SPORTS <br /> A. CLUBHOUSE TIMES AND SERVICES - GAPPA <br /> Gappa reported that the clubhouse was opened last year after the beginning of <br /> January and continued through March. The times were 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. <br /> on Saturdays and Sundays. He noted it is difficult to get employees to work <br /> during Christmas. Welles asked that a caveat be included that if an employee was <br /> available and snow was plentiful, the clubhouse be opened earlier. Gappa noted <br /> that sledding can still occur and does so even when the clubhouse is not open. <br /> Wilson asked that sledding and availability of the clubhouse be advertised. <br /> B. POTENTIAL FOR SKATING RINK- WELLES <br /> Wilson asked if the pond can be enlarged. Welles felt it would impact golfing <br /> conditions. He noted the only logical place to enlarge the pond is to the south, <br /> which would affect the Sth hole. Wilson would like to see the rink be a <br /> community rink. Wilson asked that enlargement of the pond be reviewed. <br /> Welles reported that the well can be used for flooding the pond. Gappa said the <br /> well is new, added as part of the golf course irrigation system, and would be <br /> adequate for flooding the pond. <br /> Welles reported that the pump house would not be available for use. Wilson <br /> asked if it could be added onto. Welles said that was not discussed. Gappa <br /> suggested a separate warming house be considered as the pump house has only a <br /> small overhang. <br /> It was noted that there is electricity and water available and good access to the <br /> pond. Gappa said he would have to review any impact on the wetlands. <br /> 5 <br />
