Mr. Rich Kieman 3 March 1, 1999
GME Project No. 8216
Based on the test pits, it is my opinion the foundations will be bearing
on naturally-occurring silty clay with a trace of sand. Based on SCP
testing at the test pit locations, this material should be suitable for
the assumed soil bearing value of 2, 000 psf .
I recommended that all footings be lowered below the existing fill, to
rest on naturally-occurring soil . Based on review of surface contours and
available minimal elevation information, frost footings around the
perimeter should bear on naturally-occurring soil . I recommend the three
interior column pads, designed to rest directly below the slab, be lowered
to rest on the naturally-occurring soil, or the existing fill be removed,
and fill be placed to re-attain design footing elevation.
Mr. Weibel indicated they would be excavating for footings tomorrow, and
requested a foundation base soil observation testing visit at 2 : 00 to
2 :30 pm on March 2, 1999 . In reviewing the Special Inspections required
for this project and structural drawings, we are to observe reinforcing
steel installation during footing construction, perform periodic masonry
special inspection, and observe and test welded and bolted connections .
SJR:rma
C:\SJR\8216.MEM
GME CONSULTANTS.INC.
