U .
RE: Excavation base soil observations/test pit
observations for the Service 800 building at 2190
Wayzata Boulevard in Orono, Minnesota
GME PROJECT NO. : 8216
TIME: 7 :30 am
WEATHER: Cloudy, 30° F
PERSONNEL
CONTACTED: Mr. Steve Weibel, site superintendent - KM Building Company
Don Zappa and Sons Excavating
As requested by Mr. Weibel, I visited the site today to observe excavation
base soil, and observe test holes excavated around the perimeter of the
building. The contractor has stripped off anywhere from 1-1/2 to 2 feet
of topsoil over the building footprint . Today, the contractor is working
on stripping topsoil from the northern parking area. Based on a paint
mark located on a power pole west of the southwest corner of the building,
the westerly half of the building is about at top-of-slab elevation
(elevation 1014 . 8) with the eastern half of the building at approximately
elevation 1012 feet .
Based on planned documentation, original grades in this area ranged from
elevation 1017 . 5 feet in the northwest corner, to 1014 feet along the east
end of the building. The assumed soil bearing pressure for this project,
on structural drawings, is 2, 000 psf . Fill placed below footing elevation
is to be compacted to 100% of the Standard Proctor dry density, with fill
placed above footing, below slab elevation to be compacted to 98% of the
Standard Proctor dry density.
Four test pits were excavated at the four corners of this building, to
explore soil conditions . The information is outlined below.
WILLIAM C. KWASNY, P.E. THOMAS P VENEMA, P.E. WILLIAM E. 8LOEMENDAL, RE.
GREGORY R. REUTER, PE. CHARLES M. ALLGOOD, P.E.
