BRAUN
" 4TE RTEC
Daily Field Notes
Project No.: BL-11-01014A Report No.:
Location: Orono, MN Date: September 2, 2011
Personnel Classification Regular Hours Overtime Hours
Brad McCarter, PE Project Engineer ---
Areas and work performed this day:
Arrived on site to observe test pit excavation in the area of the entrance canpoy on the east side of'Building Area B.'
The purpose of the test pit is to further identify subsurface soils in comparison with what was encountered in the soil
borings for use in design of conpoy foundations. The test pit was excavated in the general area of the eastern portion
of the canopy(about 60'feet east of building).During test pit excavation subsurface soils generally-consisted of the
-following:
% w
6) °,
1.
';D Cc. 6 2
This subsurface stratigraphy generally matches that of the soil boring (ST-105)drilled in this area during our
geotechnical evaluation. We recommend that foundations for the canopy(likely drilled piers or helical anchors)extend
through these unstable fill and organic soils to bear upon underlying stiff, or better, glacial till soils. This will require
that foundations for the canopy bear at a depth of about 15 feet in this area to ensure that unstable materials are
penetrated. This depth could decrease as foundations move west toward the building; however, the actual bearing
depth should be determined at the time of construction.
Weather: Sunny- 75 degrees Performed By: Brad McCarter
Submitted To: Jim Beckwith - Kraus-Anderson Date: September 2, 2011
• Providing engineering and environmental solutions since 1957
