-2- ,
Who can collect the samples?
Samples may be collected by any individual who has been instructed in proper
field sampling procedures. We strongly recommend that water samples be
collected by a professional in the environmental field.
Hov should samples be collected?
1. Samples should be taken from freshly exposed soil. To avoid entering a
confined space, soil samples should be taken from the backhoe bucket.
2. Water samples should be taken immediately after the tank is removed from the
excavation and should be free of sediment.
3. All samples should be collected directly into the appropriate sample bottles
provided by the laboratory.
4. All sample bottles should be clearly labeled with the facility name, date,
time, the analysis parameters requested and sample location.
5. Soil samples should be "grab" samples which are representative of the soil
at one location and not "composite" samples.
6. Samples should be promptly sealed and placed on ice for transport to the
specified laboratory.
7. The laboratory report should contain the name of the person responsible for
collecting and transporting the samples, the name of the facility, the
sample location, the date the samples were collected and the date the
samples were analyzed.
What should the samples be analyzed far?
Samples collected for tanks containing petroleum products other than gasoline
should be analyzed for total hydrocarbons as fuel oil. Samples collected for
tanks containing gasoline should be analyzed for benzene, ethyl benzene,
toluene, xylenes, and total hydrocarbons as gasoline.
Where can I have the samples analyzed?
A list of commercial laboratories is available from the MPCA. The MPCA does not
endorse or certify laboratories.
What do I do with the sampling results?
If any contamination is identified in the samples, it must be reported to the
MPCA as a release. If no contamination is found, the laboratory report must be
retained for a period of three years after tank closure. However, it would be
In your best interest to keep a copy of the analytical report in your permanent
records.
