Memo
Serving the Communities of Orono,
Long Lake and Medina
With pride and professionalism
To: Scott Johnson City Administrator of Medina and Dustin Rief City Administrator of Orono
From: Fire Chief James Van Eyll
CC: Scott Weske, City Administrator of Long Lake
Date: 08/14/2018
Re: Purchase of replacement hose due to hose failures
The Long Lake Fire Department is required to have our fire hose tested and we use a company called
FireCatt to perform the test and we have used them since 2013. This past year we had a higher than
usual failure rate of 12.76%. The average age of the hose that failed was 16.9 years. This high failure
rate has left us short of the required amount of large diameter hose to put on our new engine. Our plan
was to not order new hose for the engine since we would have enough existing hose to outfit it with. This
is now not the case. We have two quotes for replacement hose. API from Clarey's is $550.00 per
hundred -foot section and Key from Jefferson is $551.44 per hundred -foot section. We have purchased
from Jefferson in the past due to faster delivery times. The reason for the memo is that while we try to
anticipate some loss of hose in our operating budget, we didn't anticipate losing over 1,000 feet of LDH.
This could at the end of the year put us over budget. We will do our best to tighten the purse strings
moving forward. We wanted to let our cities know that we have a rather large unforeseen expense that
could negatively impact our operating budget. As per section 14 of our contract, your city has 21 days to
approve or disapprove in writing. Please let me know sooner if you can so that we may have the new
rescue pumper up and running.
If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me to discuss.
Thanks
James Van Eyll
Chief, Long Lake Fire Department
