AGENDA ITEM <br />Item No.: 3 <br />Date: September 24, 2018 <br />Item Description: Approval of MN Department of Public Safety Grant <br />Presenter: Correy Farniok Agenda Section: Consent Agenda <br />Police Chief <br />1. Purpose. Driving problems and traffic concerns are among the most common complaints received by <br />the Orono Police Department. The Orono Police Department believes that participation in the Toward <br />Zero Deaths (TZD) Enforcement Program will provide increased traffic enforcement and safety <br />awareness. TZD is a state program funded through grant money obtained by the MN Department of <br />Public Safety. Participation in the program is expected to reduce the number of alcohol related traffic <br />accidents, increase the use of seat belts and decrease distracted driving. <br />Orono Police Department partner with Medina, Minnetrista, Wayzata, West Hennepin Department of <br />Public Safety, Rogers, South Lake and Corcoran Police Departments in implementing the TZD Program <br />from October 2018 through September 2019. This will be our seventh year working with all of these <br />departments. <br />Orono Police Department will be the lead agency for the application and implementation of this grant <br />and will be responsible for collection of invoices and the distribution/ reimbursement of funds to the <br />other departments involved with this grant. <br />2. Staff Recommendation. Staff recommends approval of the City of Orono's participation in the Safe <br />and Sober Program and the Resolution to enter grant agreement with Minnesota Department of Public <br />Safety. <br />COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED <br />Motion to Approve City of Orono's participation in the Safe and Sober Program. <br />Resolution to enter grant agreement with Minnesota Department of Public Safety <br />Exhibits <br />Exhibit A.
