PART 1 DIVISION 9 - FINISHES <br /> Nelson Orangery 9415.00 <br /> October 3, 1994 3 <br /> A. GENERAL <br /> 1. The Contractor is required to thoroughly examine the Drawings in the other Sections of <br /> the Specifications for all items requiring painting. <br /> 2. The Subcontractor is responsible for a careful inspection of all building components to be <br /> painted and to determine their suitability for receiving the finish indicated. If the <br /> components are not suitable the Subcontractor must notify the Contractor immediately <br /> and not proceed without correction of the problem or a specific approval to do so. <br /> B. MATERIALS <br /> 1. All paint, urethane, enamels, stains,fillers, etc.shall be"top of the line"quality by <br /> Benjamin Moore or equal approved by the Architect. <br /> 2. Clear water repellents shall have a mildewcide. <br /> C. EXECUTION <br /> 1. The Contractor shall protect all existing work in close proximity to the area being painted. <br /> Provide and place dropcloths or other suitable protective material over the work which is <br /> affected. Clean, repair, and restore all damaged surfaces to their original finish. <br /> 2. Exterior Wood Trim: All nails in exterior wood trim that is to receive a paint finish are to be <br /> set,filled,and sanded smooth prior to the application of the primer coat of paint. <br /> 3. Interior Wood: Wood shall be sanded smooth,working in the direction of the grain. Fill <br /> small cracks, nail holes, etc.with putty of the color to match the finish. Putty after the first <br /> coat has dried. Sand between coats of finish. <br /> 4. Hardware: Shall be fitted before painting has been started and then removed until after <br /> painting has been completed. Hardware shall be reinstalled only after all painting or other <br /> finishing have been completed. <br /> 5. Cracks and Gans: Carefully caulk all gaps in finish materials before painting. This includes <br /> the joint between metal"J"and"L"type gypsum board accessories and other materials, <br /> wood mouldings and walls, separate wood moulding pieces, etc. <br /> 6. Apply exterior or interior paint only when temperatures exceed 500 F. All exterior painting <br /> must be applied during dry weather periods which are long enough for paint to dry fully. <br /> 7. Apply materials in strict conformance with the manufacturer's recommendations and in <br /> such a manner that the following results are obtained: <br /> (a) Smooth uniform appearance. <br /> (b) Complete coverage. <br /> (c) Close match with approved color. <br /> (d) Work free of runs, sags,and skips. <br /> (e) Sharp,clean edges where the finish adjoins other materials and/or colors. <br /> (f) Surfaces free of defects and damage. <br /> 8. Previously Finished Exterior Wood <br /> (a) Remove all blistered, peeling, and scaling paint to a sound substrate by scraping, <br /> sanding, and wirebrushing. Where bare wood is exposed, spot prime before <br /> applying an overall coat of primer. <br /> (b) Surfaces that exhibit moderate to heavy chalk deposits must be cleaned <br /> thoroughly to a sound substrate by wirebrushing, sanding,or by powerwashing. <br /> These surfaces must thereafter be washed. <br /> (c) All loose or split caulking shall be removed. Prkne these surfaces and recaulk. All <br /> cracks, crevices, and nail holes should be puttied. <br /> (d) Glossy surfaces under eaves and all protected areas not exposed to normal <br /> weathering should be dulled by sanding. Crystalline deposits that develop on <br /> these areas are a major cause of peeling and must be removed by flushing with a <br /> strong stream of water from a garden hose. <br /> (e) Mildew must be removed by scrubbing or with powerwash equipment,using a <br /> commercial mildew wash. <br />
