Wetland Delineation Report
Spring Hill Golf Club,Orono, MN
BES Project No. 2012-029
May 22,2013
Charts". According to the Climatology Working Groups' webpage, the area was at 110-150% of
normal year to date precipitation at the time of the site visit.
Results
Wetland 15 Northeast Arm
This wetland is located off the northeast corner of Wetland 15 which was previously delineated
by GES in 2011 and 2012. The northeast arm extend east across the golf club property and on
to the adjacent residential lots. This wetland is the Palustrine, Emergent, Seasonally flooded
(PEMC) shallow marsh swale/wetland. The sample transect was done between fairways to
document the"normal" conditions without the influence of the fairway maintenance. Wetland 15
is dominated by cattails (Typha sp.) and reed canary grass (Pha/aris arundinacea). Soils in the
wetland consisted of eight inches of N 2/0 loam, over eight inches of N 2/0 clay loam over 10YR
2/1 clay loam with 5% 10YR 4/4 iron concentrations (Al2). Surface water was present in the
wetland. Free water was observed within a depth of 12 inches in the soil pit and soil was
saturated to the surface at the time of the site visit. The wetland hydrology indicators observed
in the wetland included surface water(Al), high water table (A2), saturation (A3), Inundation on
aerial imagery (67), geomorphic position (D2) and a positive FAC-neutral test(D5). The
adjacent upland vegetation is dominated by Sugar maple (Acer saccharum), red maple (Acer
rubrum), common buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica), gooseberry current (Ribes cynosbati), red
cedar(Juniperus virginiana) and Virginia waterleaf(Parthenocissus quiquefolia). The upland
soils consisted of six inches of N 2/0 loam, over 10YR 2/1 clay loam. There was no free water
or saturated soil within a depth of 18 inches in the upland soil pit. The wetland boundary was
generally staked along the topographic and vegetation break.
The National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) (Figure 4) identifies wetlands at either end of the
northeast arm of Wetland 15, but does not identify the northeast arm itself as wetland. Based
on BES's field work Wetland A was classified as a Palustrine, Emergent, Seasonally Flooded,
(PEMC) wetland. The DNR Protected Waters Inventory map(Figure 5) identifies Wetland 15
as Protected Waters Wetland 837W which has an established Ordinary High Water(OHM
elevation of 976.7. Surveying for the 13th fairway reconstruction established that the OHW did
not extend into the northeast arm of Wetland 15. The Hennepin County Soils Survey (Figure 6)
shows the site is predominantly mapped as Lester loam (L22D2) and Glencoe loam,
depressional (1-24A). The Glencoe soil map unit is listed as a hydric soils map unit, whereas the
Lester soil map unit is listed as partially hydric.
2
