} PARD COMMISSION AGENDA ITEM
a -
y r J ;
G
9ktsKO
Item No.: 3 Date: March 6th, 2017
Item Description: Park Commission Communication And Community Outreach
Presenter: Adam T. Edwards, P.E. Agenda Section: Chairman's Report
Dir. of Public Works/ City Engineer
1. Purpose. The purpose of this item is for the Commission to discuss communication and outreach
efforts
2. Background. The Park Commission established a Public Outreach Subcommittee in 2015. The
committee completed work to update the website, revitalized the park donation policy and the Adopt -a -
Park program. Recent feedback from the joint commission council work session suggests additional
communication and outreach should be pursued by the Commission.
3. Letter to the Editor Suggestions. Park Commissioner Bryce Johnson suggests discussion regarding
the communication of expenditures from the Park Dedication Fund. The public perceptions that these
funds are coming from the general fund ("taxpayers money") and that the money could better be spent on
roads and docks. A letter to the editor, signed by the Park Commission members might be one way to
counter this. See Exhibit A for a draft letter.
4. City News Letter. The City publishes a newsletter three times a year. In the past the Public Works
Director and or members of the City Newsletter Committee prepared articles related to parks. The Park
Commission could have a more direct role in preparing articles for the newsletter. Exhibit B includes the
draft park related items for the spring newsletter.
5. City Website. The city council is interested in revitalizing the city website. This effort provides an
opportunity for the Park Commission to revitalize/ reconstruct the park related portions of the website.
PARK CO'MAHSION ACTION REQUESTED
The Park Commission should discuss which if any actions within the community outreach
communication area you'd like to undertake or adjust.
Exhibits
A. Draft park related newsletter items for spring 2017 edition.
