<br />Arvol Looking Horse, keeper of the Sacred Pipe of the
<br />Lakota Nation, received an honorary Doctor of Humane
<br />Letters degree at the University of South Dakota's 105th
<br />spring commencement ceremonies held in the
<br />DakotaDome on May 9, 1992, Honored for his teachings
<br />of Wolakota, Dr; Looking Horse is widely respected as a
<br />spiritual leader of the Lakota/Rakota/Nakota peoples, He
<br />received the Sacred Buffalo Calf Pipe from his
<br />grandmother when he was twelve and has served as the
<br />Sioux Nation's 19th�generation pipe keeper since 1966.
<br />As pipe keeper, Dr. Looking Horse provides spiritual
<br />guidance and support to those seeking to live a religious
<br />life.
<br />University President, Betty Turner Asher, and
<br />Leonard R. Bruguier, Director of the Institute of
<br />American Iridian Studies, expressed words of
<br />appreciation for Dr, Looking Horse's leadership,
<br />dedication, and commitment to Bringing peace and
<br />healing to all peoples. After President Asher presented
<br />the diploma to Looking Horse, Bruguier draped a
<br />multicolored, satin star quilt around the Lakota leader's
<br />shoulders. The two then left the stage and proceeded to
<br />the area where the Ihanktanwan Singers offered an
<br />honoring song to Dr. Looking Horse, At the song's
<br />conclusion the estimated crowd of 6,000 rose to their feet
<br />and applauded in appreciation and friendship.
<br />Friends and relatives honored Dr. Looking Horse, his
<br />wife Carole Anne, and daughter Cante at a reception.

<br />[At the honoring ceremony and reception following
<br />commencement activities,] Harpy Charger, Headman, Fool
<br />Soldiers Society, gave voice to the intrinsically valuable
<br />Lakota life-style and how Mr, Looking Horse, the nineteenth
<br />generation Pipe Keeper, stands upon his courage to affirm that
<br />peace and healing is occurring. The Fool Soldier Society was
<br />to do good for all people, The Society renounced war as a bad
<br />method of solving problems which caused other tribesmen to
<br />cell them "Fool Soldiers,"
<br />Mr. Charger presented a hair piece to Mr. Looking Horse
<br />that represents the holistic way of life: "We are part of all that
<br />is beneath us, all that is around us, and all that is above us. Our
<br />past it our present, our present is our tomorrow, and our
<br />tomorrows are the seven generations, past and present."
