Upon reviewing Table 3-D of the UBC regarding Exempt amounts of Hazardous
Materials, I believe we fall within the exempt amounts. So I think we can remain Group E.
However, in Requirements for Group E Occupancies; Section 305.2.4 Special hazards states:
Laboratories, vocational shops and similar areas containing hazazdous materials shall
separated from each other and from other portions of the building by not less than a one-hour fire
resistive occupancy sepazation.
So here we will be providing a one hour occupancy separation along the North wall of the
Sculpture area. This will be a One-hour separation with a roll down fire-shutter for the door on
that wall. We will not be using that door for exiting so I believe it is ok to use a shutter there.
(See included sketch.)
The second concern was about the building separation between the new building and existing
building during construction. At the nearest location( see included site plan)the new building
will be 20'-5" from the existing building. According to Table 5-A UBC for Type II N
construction, we only need nonrated noncombustible walls and no requirement for openings. I
believe the existing building is Type II N as well, so it should have the same requirements.
Please let me know if the Orono Code has any special requirements for multiple buildings on one
site. If the existing building is Group E Type IIN construction we may be able to consider the
