..tf r UF UIlUNU ' u14(3U51U U/"I //yi utS:G L} :u/U I. ,. ._

February 10, 1998
ORONO ADOFTS CnDF, REVISIONS TO COMPLY WITII S7'ATF 1tEGIJLATIUNS
On January 31, 1996, the State adqpted new septic system regtilalions that all lccal units of
government rnust incorpotate. The Orono City Council adopted Munic:ipal Code revisions to
compiy witt the Stete regiilations on May 13, 1996. Alhough mandetory septic system regulations
are new to the State, th new cdes will not incltide s latge number of changs fur Orono. Changes
that will effecl Orano residents are as follows:
The State regulat'tuns now reeuire that all septic system inspcctions performed by licen9ed
ersnnel must identify the system's compliance. This means that nll septic system inspections
petformed bylicensed cntractor or the City mu9t inc:lude either soil horing infoimEition or perform
a new soii boring to confirm omplinnce with current codes. Systems found to be non-conforming
outside the shorcland district wili he required t be upgrnded within ]0 years, Non-conforming
systems (ocated within the shoreland district will nEed to be repaircd withi, 7 years.
The State now requires that (] septic tnlmsipgnnce pumputs be t}lrctigh the anhcle
to adequately remove the solid material9, nrono has always encoura6ed this practice, but sme
people Itave hnci the tanks pumpecl via the inspection hole (" white pipe). Setic taril: pumpers in
Orono will nov be requited to iiform us as to how the tanks were pumed(through the manhole or
the inspection riser), p qs via thc inspec:tion ri9er will not count a5 a tintennce pum►out
(required once evcry three yexrs). As pumpers are nw licensed through the Statc, they will also
h less likely tu pump tanks through the inspection pipe and jeopFtrdie their licene,
5cptic systemsre very expensive to repair so ask tis if yu have ny questions regarding th
maintenance of your system before problems occtir.
(over)
