The purpose of the observations was to assist in determining the suitability of site soils
for support of a proposed house and attached garage. The purpose of our compaction testing
was to assist in evaluating the compacted density of fill placed below footings.
Proposed Construction
We understand the house will have a full basement with a walkout. The garage is located along
the west side. We understand the house will be of mostly wood -frame construction, and have
assumed foundation bearing pressures will not exceed 2,500 pounds per square foot.
Excavation Observations
Observations were performed on June 28 and 29 and July 1, 1994. At the time of the initial
observation, the house pad had been excavated to roughly the proposed footing grades.
As part of the observations, hand auger probes to depths of about 3 to 4 feet below the
excavation bottoms were performed. Estimates of soil consistency were made based on the
force required to advance the auger. Classifications were determined in general accordance
with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) procedures by examining the auger
cuttings.
Initial observation consisted of hand auger borings and two test pits. The test pits were
excavated and observed outside of the limits of the proposed house pad. Results of the test pit
observations and hand auger borings indicated that existing soils at proposed footing elevations
were not suitable for support of the proposed house and garage without incurring an
