MINUTES OF PARK COMMISSION MEETING <br />CITY OF ORONO <br />October 1, 1990 <br />The meeting was ca i Jed to order by Chairman Dick FJ int at <br />approximately 7:10 .m. Dick FJint, Jim GUbert, Phil Bradley, <br />Alexander Vongries, and Lee Erger were (.resent, along with John <br />Gerhardson from the City of Orono statf. Absent were I.es Kelly, <br />Susan Wilson and Bruce KokaJ. <br />1.APPROVAL OF MINUTES. <br />The first order of business was reviewing the minutes from <br />the September meeting. Upon motion, the minutes were approved. <br />2. LAKE QUALITY DISCUSSION. <br />Marty Jessen of the Fresh Water Foundation appeared to talk <br />about Eurasian Water Milfoil. He explained the general nature of <br />the exotic weed that was introduced to Minnesota some time in <br />1987# and how it has severely infested Lake Minnetonka and was <br />being spread to other lakes around the state. The Fresh Water <br />Foundation is working to organize and mobilize spending efforts <br />to decrease the spread of the weed, to harvest the weed, and to <br />educate the public. Mr. Jessen commented on chemical, mechanical <br />and biological ways to counteract the weed, and so far, he is <br />only satisfied with the mechanical and bioJogicaJ use of <br />irradication techniques on Lake Minnetonka. <br />He also mentioned that Long Lake is not yet infested, but <br />they have not done a systematic or scientific study or search of <br />that lake. He recommended that a search be done this Fall, and <br />thay any sign of the weed be immediately acted upon before it <br />spreads into that lake. <br />Clarkson Lindlay from the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District <br />appeared next. Mr. Lindlay indicated that his organization is <br />currently gathering data for the Long Lake Basin to analyze the <br />run-off, the condition of the water and outi^ow. <br />Ms. Lore Schull, 1125 Spring Hill Road, Orono, who is the <br />head of the "Save Our Lake - Long Lake/Orono Partnership" <br />appeared next. Her organization is concerned about the water <br />quality of Long Lake and is endeavoring to start an educational <br />and community action program to educate the public on uses to <br />monitor the lake and to look for warning signs. They are <br />attempting to ob* in volunteers to monitor the lake and to <br />monitor the boat accesses in the lake for evidence of the weed <br />before boats are put in the Jake.
