Our surficial <br /> geology reference indicates that the lot lies within a region of(dt)soils, typically loamy till,which may <br /> include small areas of thick,fine, loamy colluvium. The referenced soils are generally acceptable for <br /> construction, if within prescribed limits of consolidation and moisture. <br /> At the time of the inspection, the house footings had been poured,with the garage footing forms set at <br /> 20"for the pending our. Soils consisted of a damp,tan lean clay.To assess the strength of the <br /> subgrade soil, a 5/8 inch diameter smooth probe was used to penetrate the footing lines at random. <br /> With full body weight applied,the probes indicated penetration consistent with soils of acceptable <br /> strength, although slightly lower strength soils were noted within the west section of the footing near a <br /> dark patch of soil.To further evaluate the referenced dark soils, a 1 5/8'"inch diameter fluted hand <br /> auger was put down, extracting a thin zone of horizon "B" material with no detectable organic content. <br /> The load bearing capacity of the soil was evaluated by a dynamic cone penetrometer tests conducted <br /> at random, or locations indicating an increase in probe penetration along the north footing.The dynamic <br /> cone penetrometer(DCP), employs an eight kilogram (17.6 pound) hammer to drive a 20 millimeter <br /> diameter conical point into the soil,with the penetration recorded in millimeters per blow. From the DCP <br /> readings, a per blow, penetration average was recorded and an N-value derived.This N-value is an <br /> empirical relationship we have established to equate the dynamic cone data to the more familiar blows <br /> per foot(BPF)standard penetration soil boring test <br /> Test#1 —Garage North Footing (Approx. 8' From Northwest Corner) <br /> DCP Depth Per Blow Avg. /N-Value Estimated Load <br /> 1045 MM (41.0") 73.9 MM/N —4.1 1375 PSF <br />
