Box 66
Orono, MN 55356 Crystal Bay, MN 55323-0066
October 15, 2007
Kara O'Brien
1140 Willow Drive S.
Wayzata MN 55391
Dear Ms. O'Brien:
I have inspected your existing roof and decking at the request of your contractor. The
part of the roof that had the existing shingles tore off indicated that part of the roof is
plywood sheathing and part dimensional lumber. The 2006 International Residential
Code (IRC, recently adopted July 10, 2007) calls for materials in roof assemblies to be
compatible with each other, Chapter 9 section R904 subpart R904.2. The dimensional
lumber is thicker than the plywood, resulting in a ridged appearance.
The 2006 IRC also states that asphalt shingles must be fastened to a solidly sheathed roof
deck. The part of the roof deck that is already sheathed in plywood can remain as it
meets the required thickness and appears to be in good condition. The decking to be
replaced now does not have to be plywood. It can be OSB if the thickness matches the
existing plywood.
If there are any further questions please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
k../.16(./
Willie Gibbs
Inspections
Telephone(952)249-4600 • Fax(952)249-4616
www.ci.orono.mn.us
