Footing trenches, at app i a tly 4 feet in depth, <br /> had been completed in the east/northeast eluded 1 to 1 1/2 foot <br /> steps to lower elevations in the NE and _ �II r rs- <br /> Soils at the base of the footing trenche b`sted of a mois <br /> slightly mottled, sandy lean clay, with Aiha saturation of surface <br /> soils near the mid-point of the east foo 1 e. To assess the <br /> strength of the soils, a 5/8th inch dia s oth probe was uswd to <br /> penetrate the soils at random along the n lines. With full body <br /> weight applied, the probes indicated pen aii of 4 to 5 in hes, <br /> consistent with soils of acceptable consta t n. <br /> The footing excavation within the SW sect »I �o the pad, which <br /> contained reported questionable soils, h :6 -11 <br /> 6 e temporarily backfilled <br /> prior to our arrival . Observations were the south line was <br /> re-excavated near the east and. At tho 9x ato mid-point of the <br /> trench, loose fill materials were encount. d the trench as <br /> subsequently sub-cut 2 feet to achieve c e soils, with he <br /> excavation extended west to the sw corner' >r organics and ecayed <br /> woody materials were observed. <br /> The trench was sub-cut an additional 1 1/ 1 f t at the SW corner, to a <br /> gray silty clay, removing the referenced it ble organic/w ody <br /> materials. Probes conducted the length o l trench indicated <br /> acceptable strength, with a moderate incr s 1 penetration to 101', <br /> within the sub-cut zone at the SW corner.
