HomeMy WebLinkAboutMemo Van Eyll for Fire Department Access Roads1 Memo To: Melanie Curtis, Planner From: Fire Chief James Van Eyll CC: Date: 6/18/2018 Re: Fire Department Access Roads The Minnesota State Fire Code defines a Fire Department Access Road as a road that provides fire department access from a fire station to a facility, building or portion thereof. This is a general term inclusive to all other terms such as fire lane, public street, private street, parking lot lane and access roadway. The section of the code is Chapter 5 that goes into more detail on this road. In that chapter in section 503 it states that if there is one road that serves three or more homes, then it must comply with the Fire Department Access Road dimensions. We do have some leigh way with these dimensions if the homes are sprinklered with approved fire suppression systems. So, the developer has the option to bring the access road up to code before building the new homes or to sprinkler the two new homes that will be built on the lots to the south of 825 Old Crystal Bay Road South. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me to discuss.
