The slope will be cleared of vegetation the first day in order to properly grade and lay the steps. All
plant material will be removed,except for the existing large shade trees. Care will be taken around the
large trees so as not to damage the existing root system. After completion of the hardscape portion of
the project approximately 267 new plants will be planted on the slope. These plants will be native to
the area. .
Before any work begins silt fence will be placed along the shoreline to prevent any debris from making
its way into the lake.The silt fence will remain until the newly planted plants are established. During
construction,sediment logs will be placed on areas that are not currently being worked on and they will
be replaced/re-staked at the end of each working day at approximately halfway up the slope.
Upon completion of the hardscape portion of the project an organic erosion control blanket will be
placed on the entire slope and staked in place. The plants will then be placed through the erosion
bfanket. All plants will have a hole cut into the blanket so the root systems are not damaged during
planting. An organic hardwood mulch will be placed over the top of the erosion control blanket to a �
depth of approx 2".
The railing being placed on the step system will be placed on the down slope side,and will be custom
buitt on site. If the grade at any point is greater than 30"from top of stairs to soil,a railing with vertical
slats no greater than 4"will then be installed.

The stacked stone retaining wall is set on a compacted limestone base no thinner
than 6". Perforated drain tile and a loose gravel material is placed behind the wall to
provide drainage. There will be an exit for the draintile no more than every 20'.
There will be a landscape fabric placed between the drainage rock and the outs��������

Dear Melanie:
We have reviewed the revised plans emailed to us by Evelyn Turner on June 13, 2008 for the proposed
stairway construction. We have the following comments with regards to engineering matters:
• The erosion control narrative provided discusses removing all vegetation on the first day and
installing the proposed plantings once the hardscape portion of the project is completed. The
narrative then goes on to discuss the installation of silt fence immediately and installing sediment
logs in areas not being worked on. This may work but will require diligence on the contractor's
part to maintain the erosion controls on a daily basis. We recommend that the city monitor the
project closely in the beginning and after every rainfall to verify the contractor is properly
maintaining the erosion control.
• The erosion control narrative calls for using "organic erosion control blanket" but does not
indicate the type. The plans should specify Type 2S erosion control blanket with biodegradable
organic netting on both sides, not a netless blanket.
• The proposed grading and associated retaining walis appear to be acceptable and will not
adversely affect the neighboring properties if completed according to the plans submitted (dated 6-
12-08).
