GENERAL CONTRACTOR: SEPTIC CONTRACTOR:
SITE EVALUATOR: Dx Excavating REPORT DATE: Received 9/21/98
The City of Orono has Approved your on-site system design as of September 22, 1998
(approved-disapproved) (date)
with the following conunents: The site is approved, but a staff variance has been granted
to be located on 10 to 12 percent slopes as no better site is available on the
property.
THIS IS NOT A PERMIT. This is a design approval form which must accompany the site plan. A permit must
be issued to a licensed septic contractor prior to installation. A list of currently licensed septic contractors is
enclosed.
NOTICE TO INSTALLERS: Any changes to the approved plans and specs must have prior approval of the
Inspector (473-7357). Call for inspections 24 hours in advance.
ALL DRAINFIELD AREAS MUST BE FENCED OFF prior to building site excavation and fencing must remain
in place until final si[e grading. Approval to pour footings will not be granted until tlie Inspections Department
has verified that primary and alternate sites are adequately protected.
NO VEHICULAR TRAFFIC OF ANY KIND (cars, trucks, earth moving equipment, eic.) is allowed within 20'
of tested drainfield sites either before or after system construction. Compaction of these areas could render them
unusable prohibiting the timely completion and or limiting the long term use of the property.
A site copy will be available at the City Offices for the septic contractor.

NOTE: the site must remain protected before the construction of the mound in
order to protect it from soil compaction cused by vehicles driving over the sites.
All property lines must be located before construction begins. All setbacks must be
maintained. All installation must meet Local Unit of Government codes or MN
Statute 7080; whichever is greater in its restrictions.
This site is the best option for this lot. The area in the turn around is fill soil,
and the other options are on slopes of greater than 12 percen This site is not ideal
but will perform adequatley in treating the waste water generated by the home.
Because of the limited options the downslope was calculated at 12 percent even
though the slope is actually 10 percent. This will add five feet of treatment area.

Pumu Selection Procedure
A. Determine pump capacity:
Gravity Distribution
1. Minimum use is 600 gallons per hour(10 gpm)to stay
ahead of water use rate.
2. Maximum suggested for delivery to a drop box of a home
system is 2,700 gallon per hour(45 gpm)to prevent build-up
of pressure in the drop box.
Pressure Distribution
3.
a. The number of perforated laterals is 3.
b. The perforation spacing will be 3 feet on center.
c. Subtract 2 ft. from the rock layer length;
38-2 =36feet
d. Determine the number of spaces between perforations;
by dividing 3.c by 3.b;
36/3 = 12 spaces
e. 12 spaces+ 1 = 13 perforations per lateral
f. Multiply the 3.a and 3.e to determine
the total number of perforations;
3 x 13 =39 total perforations
g. Multiply 3.f and 0.74 to determine the gpm;
39 x 0.74=29 alg lons per minute
SELECTED PUMP MINIlVIUM CAPACITY = 28 GPM
B. Determine the head pressure requirements.
1. Elevation difference between the pump
and the point of discharge is 9 feet.
2. Add 5 feet of head for pressure required at the
manifold if this is a pressure distribution system.
3. Friction loss;
a. Enter the friction loss multiplier from
the table wit gpm&pipe diameter.
1.55
b. Determine the pipe length from the
pump to the discharge point. Add 25%
to the pipe length for fitting loss.
80 x 1.25 = 100 feet
c. Calculate the total friction loss by multiplying
B.3a by B.3b and dividing by 100 and rounding up;
(1.55 x 100)/ 100 =2 feet
4. Calculate the total head required by totaling B.1, B.2, and B.3c;
9 + 5 +2= 16feetofhead
TOTAL REQUIRED MINIMUM HEAD IS 16 FEET.
The pump installed must be able to deliver at least 28 gallons per minute with at
least 16 feet of head.
Log of Soil Borings
All boring measurements are in inches unless otherwise noted. The soils are located on
the bottom slope of a knoll. The parent material is glacial till. The soils are typed as
being Hayden Clay Loam by the USDA soils survey. There was no bedrock or water
present in the borings.

Maintenance
The homeowner of an individual sewage treatment system must properly have the septic
tank(s)cleaned by a licensed pumper every three years, at a minimum, in order to prevent
the sludge from reaching any point closer than 12"from the bottom of the outlet baffle,
or the scum from reaching a point closer than three inches higher than the bottom of the
outlet baffle. Plese note that this is required to eztend the life of vour svstem.
Drainage and final landscaping
All surface water must flow away from the tank and drain field area. A drainage plan
should be completed to insure tha.t surface run off from the hill,buildings, and driveway
drain away from the system.
To help the functioning of the system, it must be sodded or seeded. This will prevent
erosion, and assist in disposal of the water. Shrubbery may be planted outside of the
perimeter of the drain field,but not over the drain field.
A water meter may be installed to measure all water entering the system.
NOTE: If a chlorinated hot tub is installed in the home the water from this is
considered clean and should be discharged somewhere other than the septic system.
Any other water products that generate"clean"wter should discharge somewhere
other than the septic system. Ezamples of these include: sump pumps, pools,water
softener,iron filter,self-humidifying furnace. To plumb these into the system will
overload it and void any warranties.
GENERAL
The contents of this report are to be applied to the listed properiy only and are copy
righted. Reprints are available from DH Excavating.
The soil conditions have been established at the test hole locations only. There may be
variations in soil stratigraphy between and around the borings,therefore the extrapolation
and interpolation of the results are not warranted. All requirements of this design must be
followed in order for the system to perform up to the designed capabilities. If you should
have any questions or need further information,you may contact the staff at City of
Orono Planning and Zoning, or DH Excavating at your convenience.
