City Ordinance 199 requires that each existing on-site sewage treatment system in Orono be inspected every two years.
The on-site sewage treatment system at the above address has been inspected and appears to fall into the categories checked below.
SYSTEM CONFORMITY (1-3): 1
O "CODE SYSTEM"An ISIS which meets all the location, design and construction standards of the current Orono Municipal Code.
2 "COMPLIANT SYSTEM" An ISTS which does not meet all the location, design and construction standards of the current Orono
Municipal Code but does meet the three foot separation requirement or two foot requirement for systems installed 1996 or earlier, and
which is not failing or an imminent threat to public health or safety.
3 "NON-COMPLIANT SYSTEM" A prohibited ISTS;an ISTS located within a designated 100-year flood plain,any 1STS which may
or may not meet all the location, design,or construction standards of the current Orono Municipal Code and which is failing for any
. reason;and any ISTS with less than three feet of unsaturated soil or sand between the distribution device and the limiting sora characteristics.
TANK CONDITION(5-7): S
Tank inspection indicates:
C) Pumpout not needed at this time.
6 Septic tanks must be pumped out this year (city code recommends tanks to be pumped out once every 3 years.
Tank was last pumped ).
Make sure septic tanks are pumped through manhole and not through white inspection pipes. This allows for the proper
cleaning. Keep water softner and iron filter discharge out of septic system to prolong life of drainfield. Ask pumper to test
alarm float to verify alarm is still working in your house. The alarm warns owner that septage is about to backup into basement.
7 Inspection risers missing-tanks could not be inspected. Inspection risers(4"dia.pipe)must be installed in each tank. If
tanks have not been pumped out within the last three years, they should be pumped out now.
DRAINFIELD CONDITION(8-10): a -
Drainfield is dry,no surfacing evident.
Some evidence of surfacing, not critical yet.
10 Drainfield is saturated and visibly discharging untreated effluent to the surface. Contact the City Inspector
immediately.Repairs must be completed within 90 days.

SEPTIC SYSTEM INFORMATION SHEET
WHAT IS IN MY BACK YARD AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
Most houses built in Orono after 1960 where city sewer is not
available have two septic tanks, one or more distribution boxes and
a number of drainfield trenches . In the septic tanks, heavy sewage
solids will settle to the bottom and be decomposed by anaerobic
(oxygen-free) bacteria action. Floating solids such as grease,
fat, and soap scum will be retained inside the tank by baffles at
the inlet and outlet. This ensures that the effluent entering the
drainfield is relatively free of solids, which tend to clog up clay
soils .
Many houses built after 1975 have mound drainfields . These
systems function on the same principles as trench drainfields
except that the trench bed is installed above the original ground
to provide a separation from the seasonally high water table and
allow the system to function adequately.

HOW CAN I MAKE MY SEPTIC SYSTEM LAST LONGER?
1. Do not use your toilet or kitchen sink as a garbage can.
Undigested foods and cigarette butts will not decompose in the
septic tanks (this includes the use of garbage disposals ! ) .
2 . Have your tanks pumped at least once every three years (once every
two years is necessary with garbage disposals) . This will probably
cost you $80 - $125 . If you do not specifically ask the pumping
• contractor to open up your tanks, he will probably just put the
•
hose down the inspection riser and drain the liquid from the tanks.
• This 'method will not effectively remove the solids ! The tanks
should be opened in order to. stir the contents while pumping to
break up the sludge and scum layers. The baffleb can also be
cleaned, examined, and repaired (if necessary) at this time.

A preliminary site evaluation was completed for a possible Sub-Division for this property.
This property has very limited space for placing on-site sewage treatment systems due
to steeper slopes and wetland. Soil probing throughout the property indicates a
pressurized mound system will need to be used. City code requires a maximum slope of
6% for mound systems. The only area available for systems are on a high point along
the north property line which has slopes of approximately 8%. Using this area would
require the City of Orono to change their maximum slope code. The house location
would need to be in the northeast corner of the property.
A future on-site sewage treatment system site for the existing house would be along
Orono Orchard Road just south of the existing system.
Prior to the Sub-Division, the sites would need to be verified with a complete site
evaluation, soil borings, percolation tests and a design for a 5 bedroom home and the
city would need to change their code.

450 &480 Orono Orchard Rd.
Orono, Henn. Co., MN
This site has an existing on-site sewage treatment system for the guest house
consisting of 2-1000 gallon septic tanks, a 1-1000 gallon lift station and a pressurized
mound system. The main house has 2-1500 gallon septic tanks and a trench system
which is classified as failed due to not meeting the required separation from the bottom
of the system and the saturated soil.
This on-site sewage treatment system is designed for a Type 1, 3 bedroom Guest house
& a 5 bedroom home = 1200 gal/day, in accordance with the Minnesota Pollution Control
Agency Chapter 7080 and local ordinances.
The soils on this site are SCS soils mapped - Kkc- Kilkenny loam. The existing mound
and distribution pipes will be expanded to the south. The existing pipes are either 1-1/2"
or 2" diameter with 1/4" perforations 36" apart. The existing septic tanks may be used if
water tight and upon approval from the local Inspector. The existing 1000 gallon
pumping chamber will be abandoned and a new 2000 gallon pumping chamber will be
installed with the effluent from both tank locations flowing to one pumping chamber. A
bathroom will be installed in the barn (proposed gym) and will flow to the tanks for the
guest house.
The soils at a depth of 12" have a percolation rate of 13.8 mpi.
All neighboring wells are located greater than 100' away from the proposed treatment
area.
1
•
Keep all heavy equipment off of the proposed treatment area before and after
construction. The treatment area should be marked off before construction. This
Design is not valid &the system will need to be relocated if failure to protect the areas
proposed for On-Site Sewage Treatment occurs.
With proper installation and maintenance, this system should have no problem in
treating septic effluent effectively.
Nothing other than human waste, toilet tissue, laundry, showers, water softener etc.
should be disposed of into the septic tanks. Iron filters must be diverted out of the
system. Garbage disposals are not recommended, due to adding more solids & fine
solids passing through to the system. Excessive amounts of soaps, anti-bacterial
soaps, cleaning agents & chlorine agents may kill the bacteria needed to treat septic
effluent. Additives are not recommended. Recommend to pump & clean your tanks
through the manhole by a certified pumper every 2 years. Check with your pumper to
set up a schedule.
