To: Orono residents on mound type septic systems
From: Willie Gibbs, ISTS Manager
Date: May 10,2006
Re: Landscaping Do's and Don'ts for Mound Systems, Quick Reminder
Do plant and maintain a full cover of grass and keep mowed to a normal height, this grass cover aids
in the evaporation of large amounts of effluent(the liquid left after the "other" stuff has been removed)
in the summer time and allows the mound system to help breakdown nitrogen in the effluent
Do water the grass over the mound in extreme dry conditions, sparingly.
Do avoid unnecessary foot traffic over the mound, mow it and stay off of it. This is especially true in the
winter time. Even human foot traffic can cause frost to penetrate the mound resulting in potential
freezing problems.
Do inspect your mound system annually for winter kill, (reseed if necessary) animal damage,
(burrowing)or signs of potential failure.
Do not plant trees or shrubs on the mound system, smaller trees and shrubs may be planted at the
edges. Remember, that sunshine is the key to a healthy mound system.
Do ask questions, if you have any concerns or questions concerning your mound system
please feel free to call me, I can be reached at 952-249-4626.

RE: Septic System Repairs
Dear Mr. Carruthers:
This is a reminder that a recent inspection revealed that your
septic system was failing and must be repaired.
Please contact me within 30 days to discuss your options. You
have 90 days in which to make repairs to the system. Enclosed is
a copy of your most recent septic report.
The procedure for initiating septic system repairs is as follows:
1 . Hire a Soil/Site Evaluator to do the necessary testing
and design.
2. Submit the design to the City for approval.
3. Once the design is approved, have one or more
contractors bid on the approved design.
4. The contractor you choose should then obtain a permit
from the City before starting work, and he will call
for the required inspections.
If you have any questions please contact me at the City offices.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this letter.
Sincerely, .

Re: Septic Repairs
Dear Ms . Carruthers:
A recent inspection revealed that your septic system is
failing to treat waste properly and must be repaired.
On at least two separate occasions you have been sent
notifications of the required septic repair. At this time we
still have not received any indication that repairs have begun.
If your contrator has not been granted a permit for the required
septic system repairs by September 30, 1991, we will be forced to
turn this matter over to the City Attorney.
If you have any questions, please contact me at the City
Offices (473-7357). Thank you for your prompt attention to this

RE: Septic System Repairs
Dear Mr. Carruthers:
A recent inspection revealed that your septic system is failing
to treat waste properly and must be repaired.
On at least two separate occasions you have been sent
notifications of the required septic system repair and a July 1
deadline has been established. We still have not received any
indication that repairs have begun. Unless a repair permit is
issued or a repair schedule approved by July 1, 1992, we will be
forced to turn this matter over to the City Attorney.
Please contact the City offices as soon as possible to discuss
your repair options. Thank you for your prompt attention to this
matter.
Sincerely,
de4;t:Uhnd-----
