GENERAL CONTRACTOR: SEPTIC CONTRACTOR:
SITE EVALUATOR: S—P Testing REPORT DATE: September 15, 1993
The City of Orono has Approved your on-site system design as of July 18, 19.9 4
(approved-disapproved) (date)
with the following comments: The system design is approved as a variance since
insufficient area exists for a conforming drainfield due to lot size.
The anticipated water usage is 300gpd and area for 172gpd. Pretreatment
may reduce the drainfield area required for treatment, but water must be
used wisely for system longevity. A water meter must be installed.
THIS IS NOT A PERMIT. This is a design approval form which must accompany the site plan. A permit must
be issued to a licensed septic contractor prior to installation. A list of currently licensed septic contractors is
enclosed.
NOTICE TO INSTALLERS: Any changes to the approved plans and specs must have prior approval of the
Inspector (473-7357). Call for inspections 24 hours in advance.
ALL DRAINFIELD AREAS MUST BE FENCED OFF prior to building site excavation and fencing must remain
in place until final site grading. Approval to pour footings will not be granted until the Inspections Department
has verified that primary and alternate sites are adequately protected.
NO VEHICULAR TRAFFIC OF ANY KIND (cars, trucks, earth moving equipment, etc.) is allowed within 20'
of tested drainfield sites either before or after system construction. Compaction of these areas could render them
unusable prohibiting the timely completion and or limiting the long terns use of the property.
A site copy will be available at the City Offices for the septic contractor.

This site has an existing failing On-Site Sewage Treatment System
. with effluent surface discharging. This site has very limited
space for a new treatment system. Soil Borings indicate mottled
soil at 36" to 38" below the ground surface . Due to the seasonally
high water table (mottled soil ) this site would require a Pressurized
Mound System. There is no area available for a mound . With the
mottled soil at 36" below the ground surface, an At Grade System
could be installed which is classified as an alternative system.
Due to this site being very limited, an at grade system with a
loading factor at 4gpd/sq.ft. would be adequate for only 172
gal/day. By using pretreatment, the loading factor is 6gpd/sq.ft,
the area available would be adequate for 256 gal/day. A normal
2BR home is Designed for 300 gal/day. Low water use facilities k'
would need to be installed, 1.5 gal .flush toilets , low flow
shower heads , water softner with recharge tank with no discharge
etc. to reduce the water use. An Alternative system will require
a variance from the City of Orono. The Multi-Flo Waste Water
Aerobic Treatment System is an NSF approved Class 1 aerobic
system. The system requires to be serviced 2 times a year which
will be done by Schirmers Wastewater Treatment System, Inc. A
2 year service contract comes with the purchase of the unit. After
the 2 year period, the homeowner is required to carry a service
; ,contract at a cost of $100 .00yr. (1993. price) . A report will be
' sent to the City, MPCA, Multi-Flo & the homeowner. .The Multi-Flo
unit will be model F+B 0 . 5 , 500 gal/day. This system treats the
•
BOD & TSS with a removal of 96% to .98%&.._virus removal is greater
than 99% . To install the Multi-Flo unit, a 500 gallon septic tank •
'twill need to be installed as- a trash trap ahead of the unit.
• The pumping chamber will be a 1500 gallon capacity to allow for
'' additional reserve storage if needed. 'A water meter will need to
be installed to monitor daily water use. If the water use exceeds.
256 gal/day, the effluent will need'to.be-i'delivered by ,a.-timeri
'. 4fonly•allowing 256 gal/day. A high water alarm would signal to the
homeowner to conserve on water or have the reserve storage pumped
& hauled off site .

The soils on this site are SCS soils mapped - LmB - Lerdal loam.
The proposed At Grade System has an existing trench below the
treatment area . The existing trench must be broken up at the
down slope toe of the system.
The soils at a depth of 12" have a percolation rate averaging
3 .2 min/inch.
A pumping chamber will need to be installed to lift the effluent
to the treatment area.
The power supply and switches must be located outside the manhole and
pumping chamber in a weather proof enclosure. A warning device must
be installed with a light and sound device, this is in case of a pump
failure. Mercury floats are a good method.
, An existing lift pump in the lower level will need to be replaced
due to to a metal basket being rusted. A pipe outlets the basket
which will need to be capped off. This pipe may flow to the existing .
tanks east of the house . Recommend to varify no water flows from a
• sink or toilet before capping off.
All neighboring wells are located greater than 100 ' away from the
• proposed treatment area.
-- Keep all heavy equipment off of the proposed treatment area before and
after construction. The treatment area should be marked off before
construction. This Design is not valid & the System will need to
'be relocated if failure to protect the.-areas proposed for On-Site ---~
Sewage Treatment occurs .
..With proper installation and maintenance, this system should have no
in treating septic effluent effectively.

Nothing other than gray water, (laundry, showers , etc . ) human
waste & toilet tissue should be disposed of into the septic tanks.
Garbage disposals are not recommended. Smaller amounts of laundry
soaps , dish soaps , cleaning agents, etc. are better for the system.
Antibacterial soaps & chlorine agents may kill the bacteria needed
to treat septic effluent properly. Additives are not recommended,
they may cause harmful damage to your system. Recommend to pump
& clean your tanks by a certified pumper every year if you have
1 tank & every 2 years if you have 2 tanks to insure proper
maintenance.
