RE: Boulder Retaining Wall Construction Evaluation
1005 Old Long Lake Road

Dear Mr_ Frees:
This letter is being sent at your request to document my observations during a post-construction site visit
of the boulder retaining wall at the 1005 Old Long Lake Road project in Wayzata, Minnesota. 1
understand that Outdoor Excapes completed the retaining wall in 2004 and that no other work has been
done on the retaining wall since the time of completion. No project specifications, site geotechnical
reports, or construction observation reports were provided to me.
My cursory site observations were performed on September 27,2005_ The following summarizes my
observations during the site visit:
- The retaining wall was approximately 150 feet in length and varied in exposed height from 6.5 feet
to 1 foot.
- A batter/setback of 5°-10°was present.
- The typical size for the structural boulders ranged from 30"-48"diameter near the bottom of the wall,
18"-30"in the middle courses, and 12"-18"on upper courses.
- A traffic surcharge load due to the gravel driveway was present at the top of the wall approximately
2'from the back of wall.
- No surcharge loading due to the house was present.
- Level perpendicular slopes were present in front of and behind the wall.
- An embedment depth of approximately 6"appeared to be present.
- Filter fabric was observed at the back of the boulders,
- Wall backfill materials were reported to be well-graded granular sand.
- No signs of wall settlement, bulging,or other distress were observed.
- No signs of wall backfill settlement were observed.
- No signs of foundation soil settlement were observed.
- Most site surface runoff was being directed away from the back of the wall_
The construction of the retaining wall appeared to be in general conformance with the evaluation that was

performed using the design guidelines presented in the second addition of the"Design Manual for
Segmental Retaining Walls"(DMSRW)published by NCMA in 1996. Direct all surface drainage away
from the retaining walls and the slope, especially from roof runoff and gutters. If soil conditions,
proposed layouts, or other design parameters vary from that assumed a revised analysis might be needed.
