Date: September 2, 1997
Subject: Orono Ice Arena Landscape Plan-Revisions Approved by Staff
Gary Schroeder, Operations Manager for the Ice Arena, submitted a revised tree planting plan that
substitutes coniferous trees for most of the hardwoods originally planned for those areas generally
within 50'of the building. They are getting these mature pine and spruce trees from the school annex
east of Old Crystal Bay Road, where the existing rows of trees need thinning. This will save the Ice
Arena approximately$19,000.
The coniferous trees will provide some immediate screening adjacent to the building which would
likely have taken 5-10 years to develop with the smaller deciduous stock initially proposed.
The original plan proposes approximately 12 future additional trees(honeylocust, red maple, red oak)
within and around the parking lot area, which will help to soften the view of the parking lot,and will
be in keeping with the existing school property trees along the west side of Old Crystal Bay Road.
Jack Nuveau of the Ice Arena agreed they would plant these additional trees within the next year.
Staff approved this minor change to the landscape/planting plan subject to the additional trees being
planted next year and subject to City retaining the right to review the coniferous plantings when
completed and require any additional plantings needed.

Subject: Orono Ice Arena Landscape Plan
Gary Schroeder, Operations Manager for the Ice Arena, has submitted a revised tree planting plan
that substitutes coniferous trees for most of the hardwoods originally planned for those areas
generally within 50' of the building. They are getting these mature pine and spruce trees from the
school annex east of Old Crystal Bay Road, where the existing rows of trees need thinning.
The deciduous trees will provide some immediate screening adjacent to the building which might
take 5-10 years to develop with the smaller deciduous stock initially proposed. Also, it appears there
are no areas where sidewalks would be shaded all day long where icing might result.
Note that the original plan appears to propose additional trees (honeylocust, red maple, red oak)
within and around the parking lot area.It is not clear whether these are proposd at this time, but they
will help to soften the view of the parking lot,and will be more in keeping with the existing school
property trees along the west side of Old Crystal Bay Road.
I recommend approval of the revision, subject to the placement of the 12 or so deciduous trees
proposed around the parking lot in the original plan. The original resolution referenced the original
plan, but did not specify species. It is my opinion that as long as the original planting layout is
generally followed, this does not require Council review.
Please give me your thoughts so we can advise Schroeder Tuesday morning how to proceed.

Dear Mike:
Following is our proposal for the changes earlier discussed over the phone outlining the
substitutions to the original plan which we believe to further enhance the total arena
package. The proposed changes are the direct result of our arena being offered a number
(approx. 50) beautiful mature white spruce and pine trees which the school district needs
to thin out to prevent crowding. These trees are much larger in size than originally planned
and have been extremely well taken care of by the school personnel.
The replacement of the hardwoods in the original plan will provide the public with year
around aesthetic beauty versus trees which would have provided cover for only that period
of time when the leaves were on the trees. The plan will also be more consistent with what
the neighbors have currently in place.
The changes proposed will also save the arena approximately$19,000.00.
Enclosed, please find for your review, a listing of the trees to be substituted as well as a
copy of the original plan which has been color coded to make it easier to visualize the
proposed changes.
Thank you for your consideration in these matters and your continued support of our
project!
Sincerely,
-2av

PROPOSED SUBSTITUTIONS
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION KEY NEW PLAN COLOR
Sugar Maple AS 1 White Pine Green
Quaking Aspen P1 White Spruce Yellow
Red Oak QR1,2 White Spruce Yellow
Red Oak QR3 Blue Spruce Yellow
Basswood TA1,2 White Spruce Yellow
Also, the 11 White Spruce (8 ft. high) designated PG on the original plan will be replaced
with 6 of the much larger(15-25 ft.) White Spruce available to us. More than that are
available but I believe it may cause an overcrowding condition if too many are placed here.
All other plant materials will remain the same as the original site plan.
