The scope of the inspection was limited to evaluating the condition of the grout. To do so, KA removed the faceshell of a concrete masonry unit, right next to one of the expansion bolts. The bolt was checked and found to be freely rotating when turned by hand. The condition of the masonry grout was solid and intact. The grout resisted being scraped by a steel blade and was not found to be soft nor friable. Overall, the grout appeared similar to grout used in normal construction practice. A photo of the condition as found is resented below. J Weather: Sunny, 82 F Performed By: J. Langdon Submitted To: J. Upon arrival, the slab-on-grade was saw cut and soil was removed in the trench down approximately 2 feet from the top-of-slab elevation. The soil removed from the trench was stock piled adjacent to the trench. The stockpiled soil was visually classified as a dark gray to dark brown lean clay in a saturated to over saturated state. Two hand auger probes were performed to depths of 3 feet below the trench bottom. Below the couple inches of oversaturated"slop"clay, the soils consisted of gray lean clay that was judged to have a consistency of medium to rather stiff based on the turning resistance of the hand auger and considered suitable for slab and electrical utility trench backfill support. After performing the hand auger probes and the visual classification of the stockpiled soil,it was recommended that the remaining"slop"be removed from the trench and a clear rock placed to form a stable working platform for the utility crew. In its existing condition, the stockpiled soil from the trench was over saturated and appears unsuitable for use as a backfill material. It was recommended a suitable material that can be compacted be imported and used as trench backfill in-lieu of the stockpiled soil. Concerning the two items we discussed: 1) In Area.E, the W8x13 spliced beams over the corridor for piping support that have been trimmed and are now approximately 2 inches short may be modified by welding an L.2x2x3/8"angle,6 inches long, perpendicular to the two existing beam bearing angles. Looking down at the beam, the end connection should create a"T"shape. Weld vertical and horizontal legs of the existing angles to the vertical leg of the new 6 inch long angle with 3/16"fillet weld. .. .........._..._..2.)......In..Aroa E,_atjhe w.estem end.D..fthe..corddor.nearest..the..1.990..pool..addition,..it..is.structurally............................... .............. acceptable to support the new piping supports from the flange of the existing W27 beam supporting second floor to.
